Exactly how many people were injured as a result of the April 15 Boston Marathon Bombing (BMB)? An official tally from the Boston Public Health Commission puts the number at an incredible 282 injured and four killed, including MIT police officer Sean Collier. “Only two patients wounded in the Boston Marathon bombings remained in critical condition” on April 22, the Boston Globe reported, “but the count of injured people who were treated in area hospitals has risen sharply to 282, according to the Boston Public Health Commission. That is far higher than the initial estimate of 170.”

This cellphone video captures the immediate seconds following the first blast of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing. Taken several meters away from where the bomb was detonated, the footage documents a number of apparent figures who subsequently appear in media coverage as purportedly injured from the ordnance.

The Boston Marathon bombings have a lot of features that can only be reconciled as being a mock training exercise, and the recent history of using the Boston Marathon for bomb training exercises makes that comparison even more compelling. The Boston Herald reports that emergency drills were conducted at the 2012 Boston Marathon in which maneuvers included training for “bombs at the finish line”(1). Further, an experienced athlete and eyewitnesses at this year’s Boston Marathon, Alastair Stevenson, also testifies “there were dogs with their handlers going around sniffing for explosives and, and, we were told on a loud announcement that we shouldn’t be concerned, it was just a drill”(2).
Memory Hole has a good many sharp readers and comment contributors. This detailed set of observations was submitted as a lengthy comment and addresses unusual elements of the far-less-photographed second bombing site. Given its especially important points I have requested the author’s permission to present the commentary as a guest post, to which she agreed provided her anonymity is preserved.-JT
Arrangement and analysis of still photos from the aftermath of the initial Boston Marathon bombing blast reveals incongruities in the appearances of injuries, absence of wounds where wounds should be readily observable vis-à-vis punctured and torn clothing, and possible application and donning of makeup by figures present.

This past week the Public Broadcasting Service presented its viewership with a flurry of reportage and commentary on the Newtown tragedy, taking special care to closely associate the incident with the issues of gun control, mental health, and school safety. Specific programs have included Washington Week, PBS NewsHour, NOVA, and FRONTLINE. This degree of coverage from an outlet with significant credibility among the educated professional class is especially unusual.
This letter was received from a reader in central Europe and relates provocative claims and insights on Sandy Hook, particularly with the backdrop of several new PBS-sponsored “documentaries” addressing the incident. The text is reproduced in its entirety below with minor editing. The name and other identifying information of the writer have been withheld to preserve their anonymity.
It’s no secret that journalists working for the bulk of mainstream news outlets seek to uncover and exploit every facet of gruesome events such as ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner’s apparent rampage or the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown Connecticut. Such routinized reporting typically involves generating grist for the 24 hour news cycle by identifying and maximizing all possible video evidence while interviewing every witness willing to speak before the camera. This is exactly how coverage of the two incidents may be distinguished.
A cross section of kill-to-injury ratios of major mass shootings suggests that if Adam Lanza acted alone in carrying out the Sandy Hook Elementary School carnage he was among the most accurate killers in modern history, exceeding even the lethal damage meted out by Al Capone’s machine gun-wielding henchmen in the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.
